No Boston Tea Party this year

Back in the 18th century American colonists rebelled against King George III. Something to do with no taxation without representation. Something about inequity. Something about independence. Anyway, some tea got dumped in the Boston harbour and the King eventually got the message.

How a secret Pentagon program came to Abu Ghraib

The roots of the Abu Ghraib prison scandal lie not in the criminal inclinations of a few Army reservists but in a decision, approved last year by Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld, to expand a highly secret operation, which had been focussed on the hunt for Al Qaeda, to the interrogation of prisoners in Iraq. Rumsfeld’s decision embittered the American intelligence community, damaged the effectiveness of élite combat units, and hurt America’s prospects in the war on terror.

============================================
Only six weeks remain before the Republican Convention comes to New
York City! Despite the efforts of Republican Mayor Bloomberg to stifle our
protest, we are moving forward at full speed to make August 29 the
biggest, most diverse, most powerful protest this city has seen in years, a
historic outpouring of outrage at the Bush Administration and hope for
a better world. We had a packed and energetic mobilizing meeting last
week, with more than 250 people crowding into our Midtown offices, and
volunteers are fanning out around the city to spread the word about
August 29.

PLUG IN!
To make August 29 a massive success, we need everyone’s involvement.
Read on for a list of ways you can plug in to our organizing efforts.

SPREAD THE WORD
· Forward this email and future UFPJ alerts to everyone you know, and
post it on any appropriate listservs, blogs, or websites.

· Distribute and display August 29 leaflets, stickers, and posters. You
can pick these up at one of the locations listed at the bottom of this
email, or get them through our website. Leaflets are available for
downloading at http://www.unitedforpeace.org/leaflets and stickers and
posters can be ordered at http://www.unitedforpeace.org/merchandise

· Join a leafleting team. UFPJ volunteers will be at the Harlem Book
Fair, the Stonewall Democratic Fair, and screenings of Fahrenheit 9/11
this weekend, and leafleting at subway stops during the week. Visit
http://www.unitedforpeace.org/outreach for details, or contact
ufpjsummer@yahoo.com to get involved.

VOLUNTEER
We need hundreds of volunteers to help out with tasks between now and
August 29, and literally thousands to help out on the day of the
protest. There are several ways you can plug into our volunteer operation:

· Help out the office. We need people to help answer phones, make
outreach phone calls, do data entry and word processing, deliver materials
to distribution centers, and help with general office support in the
hectic weeks between now and August 29. Contact Nia Wiltshire, our
volunteer coordinator, at 212-868-5545 or nia@unitedforpeace.org

· Sign up to volunteer on August 29. If you can help with leafleting
and merchandising, greeting buses and trains, or office coverage, contact
Nia at 212-868-5545 or nia@unitedforpeace.org  To volunteer as a
marshal for the march and rally, contact Carlito at
security@unitedforpeace.org

· Join the mailing list. Send a blank email to
nycvolunteers@unitedforpeace.org to join our volunteers email list, and
receive additional notices of specific volunteer needs in the weeks to
come.

JOIN A WORKING GROUP
At our mobilizing meeting last week, we set up six different working
groups to handle different aspects of the organizing for August 29. If
you’d like to be involved in the planning for August 29, send an email to
the relevant address below.

· Street Outreach: nyc-massoutreach@unitedforpeace.org
· Neighborhood Outreach: nyc-neighborhoods@unitedforpeace.org
· Organizational Outreach: nyc-orgoutreach@unitedforpeace.org
· Publicity: nyc-publicity@unitedforpeace.org
· Fundraising: nyc-fundraising@unitedforpeace.org
· Arts & Culture: nyc-arts@unitedforpeace.org

OFFER HOUSING TO PROTESTERS FROM OUT OF TOWN
Got floor space, a sofa, an extra bed? Huge numbers of people from
around the country would like to join the August 29 protest, but won’t be
able to come unless they have a place to stay. Please offer whatever
space you have available by visiting http://www.unitedforpeace.org/rnc

ATTEND THE NEXT MOBILIZING MEETING
Mark your calendar for Tuesday, August 3 – that’s when we’ll have our
next citywide mobilizing meeting, at a location to be announced.

DONATE!
Organizing a protest on the scale of August 29 takes a lot of money, to
pay for printing, extra staff, an enormous sound system, and a host of
other costs. We need to raise at least $200,000 in the coming weeks.
Please make the most generous contribution you can! You can donate by
credit card online at http://www.unitedforpeace.org/donate or call our
office at 212-868-5545 to make a credit card donation by phone. Or, send a
check or money order to UFPJ, P.O. Box 607, Times Square Station, New
York, NY 10108.

DISTRIBUTION CENTERS
Leaflets, stickers, and posters are available for pick up at the
following locations around New York City. If you have a space that could
serve as an additional distribution center, please contact Nicole at
ufpjsummer@yahoo.com

Additional centers will be coming in the days and weeks to come; check
http:/www.unitedforpeace.org/centers for details.
